Thrivent Financial names VP, chief compliance officer
Christopher Kopka joins organization from Jackson National Life
|MINNEAPOLIS (June 13, 2006) – Christopher Kopka has joined Thrivent Financial for Lutherans as vice president and chief compliance officer. In this position, Kopka will be responsible for overseeing and managing the organization’s compliance program.
“Chris is an accomplished professional in his field, and he will be a valuable addition to Thrivent Financial,” said Terry Rasmussen, senior vice president, general counsel and secretary. “He brings significant compliance expertise and passion for law.”
Kopka most recently worked at Jackson National Life Insurance Co. as vice president, deputy general counsel-compliance. In this position, he managed the compliance function for four retail broker-dealers, two limited purpose broker-dealers (underwriting and clearing) and an investment adviser established for separately managed accounts with a combined staff of 110 compliance professionals, including seven chief compliance officers located in several cities throughout the United States.
Prior to his experience at Jackson National, Kopka was vice president of compliance and regulatory affairs for American Express Financial Advisors (now Ameriprise Financial, Inc.) where he managed 70 compliance professionals. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing compliance for money laundering prevention, market conduct and sales practice surveillance, market timing and late trading oversight, and ERISA compliance. Earlier in his career, Kopka was an attorney at the law firms of Gray, Plant, Mooty, Mooty & Bennett in Minneapolis and Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver and Jacobson in New York.
Kopka holds a juris doctor from the University of Minnesota, where he was a Robert A. Stein merit scholar, as well as a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Michigan. He also has been an adjunct professor at the University of Minnesota Law School.
