Thrivent Financial names new chief operating officer

Thrivent Financial Board of Directors appoints Brad Hewitt to newly created position

Brad Hewitt
MINNEAPOLIS (Nov. 20, 2008) – Thrivent Financial for Lutherans announced today that Brad Hewitt has been promoted to senior executive vice president and chief operating officer. Hewitt most recently served as senior vice president of Fraternal Operations for Thrivent Financial. He will report to chairman, president and CEO, Bruce Nicholson.

Hewitt will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the company and its focus on delivering strong results in 2009 and beyond. Nicholson will continue to be responsible for the long-term strategy for Thrivent Financial as well as all of its corporate functions.

“Brad’s experience as a former CFO and CEO and his knowledge of the financial services industry, the fraternal model, and Lutheranism will help us as we continue to deliver the best results for our members,” said Nicholson. “The CEO/COO model is new to Thrivent Financial, and this new role will further enhance our overall operations as well as position the company for future growth.”

Hewitt came to Thrivent Financial in 2003 from The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, where he served as the organization’s chief administrative officer. Hewitt began his career in 1982 with Minnesota Mutual Life, St. Paul, Minn., and joined United HealthCare Corp., Minneapolis, in 1986 as director of underwriting. From 1993-1998, he served as chief financial officer and then as president and chief executive officer of Diversified Pharmaceutical Services, Minneapolis.

“I am excited to take on this new role for Thrivent Financial,” said Hewitt. “This is a great opportunity for the company to deliver even greater results and benefits for our members.”

Hewitt currently serves as the chair of the board of regents for Concordia University in St. Paul and is on the board of the Lutheran Community Foundation. He has also served on the board of Lutheran World Relief and the policy/government relations group for Lutheran Services in America, the largest U.S. faith-based service group.

A native of Bloomington, Minn., Hewitt received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and graduated from the Program for Management Development at Harvard University. He also has received an honorary doctorate from Concordia University, St. Paul, Minn.
