MINNEAPOLIS (Feb. 17, 2010) – An art exhibition depicting the Passion of Christ by old and modern masters will be shown by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans from Feb. 25 to Aug. 31, 2010. The 62-work exhibition highlights the crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus and includes paintings, prints and drawings by Rembrandt van Rijn, Édouard Manet, Albrecht Dürer, George Wesley Bellows and 31 other artists.

“The Passion: 500 Years in Art” will hang in the Thrivent Financial Collection of Religious Art Gallery at the Thrivent Financial Corporate Center, 625 Fourth Ave. S. in downtown Minneapolis. Gallery hours are 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The exhibition explores historical, theological and devotional variations of the Passion theme using artworks from the 15th through the 20th centuries. It features a cornerstone piece of the Thrivent Financial’s 800+ piece collection of religious art, “The Crucifixion,” by George Wesley Bellows (1882-1925), on view for the first time in the Thrivent Financial galleries since 1996.

“The Passion: 500 Years in Art” will be divided into two sections. Upon entering the gallery, visitors will be able to walk through a pictorial narrative of the Passion story, viewing works such as “Christ Before Pilate,” “The Flagellation,” “The Last Supper,” and “Christ Washing the Feet of the Disciples.”

In the central gallery space, prevailing Passion themes will be explored, including the crucifixion, Pietà, lamentation and resurrection, among others.

The exhibition is free of charge to the public. To schedule gallery talks or special tours for groups, contact Joanna Reiling Lindell, curator, or James R. Wehn, assistant curator, at 612-844-8072 or joanna.lindell@thrivent.com or james.wehn@thrivent.com.

Related, loaned prints and drawings from the Thrivent Financial Collection of Religious Art will be shown at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts from March 6 to Sept. 12, 2010, in galleries 315 and 316. Thrivent Financial is the sponsor of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts Public Tours program in 2010.
