Thrivent Financial receives financial literacy award

Institute for Financial Literacy honors organization for charitable giving workshop

MINNEAPOLIS (Nov. 3, 2009) – Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, a Minneapolis-based not-for-profit financial services and membership organization, has received a 2009 Excellence in Financial Literacy Education (EIFLE) Award from the Institute for Financial Literacy. The award was recently presented at the institute’s annual conference on financial education in Philadelphia, Pa.

Thrivent Financial was honored for its workshop, “Charitable Giving: How to Make a Difference by Giving Back.” It won in the category of “Curriculum of the Year, Postsecondary/Adult General.”

The EIFLE Award acknowledges “innovation and quality of financial literacy education efforts and the commitment of those that offer them,” according to Leslie E. Linfield, executive director of the Institute for Financial Literacy.

“Charitable Giving: How to Make a Difference by Giving Back” is an interactive, stewardship-based workshop created to help people use their time, talents and treasures to make charitable gifts that align with their values. Participants learn about:
  • Charitable giving financial tools that may decrease their taxes and/or supplement their retirement income.
  • Ways they can leave a charitable legacy that will continue to make a positive difference far into the future.
  • Opportunities to give back in other ways, such as volunteering.

The workshop features examples and photographs of members of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans who used different financial tools to make charitable gifts.

“Participants can relate to these stories,” said Nancy Verdier, Thrivent Financial program developer of the workshop. “The people in the presentation materials look and live just like them.”

Verdier acknowledged the numerous people at Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and the Lutheran Community Foundation who contributed to the winning workshop.
“I’m grateful that the EIFLE Award judges affirmed all of the creativity, financial expertise and hard work that went into this cooperative effort,” said Verdier. “Also, in a time when we hear so much about greed, I appreciate this spotlight on our financial education workshop about helping others through charitable giving.”

The Institute for Financial Literacy is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization whose mission is to make effective financial literacy education available for all American adults.
