State Fair poll: Men confident, women concerned, about retirement prospects
Gender, age influence feelings about financial future
| MINNEAPOLIS (Sept. 7, 2009) – Perhaps men are from Mars and women from Venus after all. Given the genders’ very different feelings toward their retirement prospects, it would seem unlikely that they share the same planet.
According to a survey of 585 adults at the Minnesota State Fair on Sunday, Sept. 6, two in three males (66 percent) said they felt confident about their retirement prospects while nearly three in five females (57 percent) said they felt concerned. The poll, taken at the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans booth, also found that the older the respondent the more likely he or she was to feel confident about the financial future. Among all poll respondents, 55 percent reported feeling confident about their retirement prospects while 45 percent reported feeling concerned. Whether retirement is 45 days or 45 years distant, Koplin says taking control of your finances can provide a brighter tomorrow. “Knowing your financial options can increase your confidence about the future,” Koplin notes. “Whatever your current situation, there are steps you can take to improve your financial security.” Koplin asserts that even seniors who are already retired can take steps to improve their financial lot. “It’s no longer enough to build one’s retirement assets and ‘hope for the best’ during retirement,” she says. “Today, seniors can assess whether their assets will last as long they do. And that should lead to feelings of financial confidence.” Thrivent Financial has developed a new service that addresses one of consumers’ greatest worries - running out of money in retirement. The Thrivent Retirement Income Optimizer®* or TRIO®, is a new type of fee-based financial program that helps individuals diversify their assets for growth and income liquidity, build up sources of dependable income and balance current spending with future income needs.
