Thrivent Financial releases 2008 charitable outreach summary at Report to the Community

APPLETON, Wis. (June 2, 2009) – During its annual Report to the Community, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans announced that together with its approximately 2.6 million members, it generated $309.8 million in support of communities, congregations and individuals in need in 2008. Thrivent members raised and donated $183.6 million, while Thrivent Financial added $126.2 million in direct contributions to communities, nonprofit organizations and Lutheran institutions.

Thrivent Financial members are organized into 1,357 local groups, called chapters, to plan and execute benevolent, social and educational activities. Last year, through Thrivent-related programs, members of the organization spent 21.3 million hours volunteering in nearly 100,000 activities.

“Everyday, our members help others,” said Bruce Nicholson, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Thrivent Financial. “They organize fundraisers, stock food shelves, build houses and host educational workshops about finances and values. Whatever the need, our members respond.”

Fox Cities Impact
More than $6 million and nearly 255,000 volunteer hours. That’s the support generated in the Fox Cities for community organizations, congregations and individuals in need during 2008 by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans with its nearly 40,000 local members, employees, retirees and the Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation.

“Thrivent Financial is proud to be a community partner,” said Jon Stellmacher, senior vice president and chief of staff and administration for Thrivent Financial, during the Report to the Community. “We encourage and support our members and our employees in their efforts to help strengthen our community. I am very proud of the profound impact they continue to make in the Fox Cities.”

A few highlights of Fox Cities outreach include:
• The Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Foundation provided 55 grants totaling more than $1.83 million to charitable organizations in the Fox Cities during 2008. These grants focused on creating economic self-sufficiency in the areas of financial wellness, early childhood education and ending homelessness.
• Through the Employee Giving Campaign, Thrivent Financial employees and the Foundation supported the United Way-Fox Cities and other local charities with contributions totaling nearly $463,000 in 2008.
• Thrivent Financial employees, retirees and their families volunteered approximately 97,500 hours throughout 2008, dedicating their time and talents to service projects and nonprofits in the Fox Cities.
• Thrivent Financial members in the Fox Cities participated in 508 community activities while volunteering 157,400 hours.
• The Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity alliance which supported construction of five homes in the Fox Cities in 2008.

Financial Education
Thrivent Financial offers a number of unique programs and two dozen financial literacy workshops throughout the year and in communities across the country.

Several highlighted during the Report to the Community include:
Debt Savvy: Thrivent Financial Bank is currently launching this program in the Fox Cities to help consumers become smarter about managing debt. Debt Savvy provides one-on-one relationships with a “Debt Guide” for free guidance on lowering overall debt for individuals’ and families’ long-term financial success.
• Teach Your Kids to Share Day: This national event was held on April 24 in 30 cities across the country to bring families together for interactive workshops to learn about sharing, saving and spending using a values-based approach to money management. A local event took place at the EAA AirVenture Museum in Oshkosh, Wis.
More Than Money Matters: This workshop helps participants develop skills to take charge of the finances and reach their goals. It was awarded the 2008 Excellence in Financial Literacy Education Award from the Institute for Financial Literacy.

“Now, more than ever, people are looking for the information they need to survive tough economic times,” said Stellmacher. “In 2009, we reaffirmed our commitment to being a go-to resource for financial education.”
