67-foot exhibit on wheels contrasts poverty housing with newly dedicated Habitat home

Volunteers celebrate and learn at home dedication on May 9

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (May 6, 2009)—Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans will dedicate a recently completed home in Oklahoma City on Saturday, May 9 in Habitat’s Hope Crossing neighborhood at 816 NE 83rd Street. Parked down the road, the Thrivent Builds Mobile, a bright red exhibit on wheels, is free and open to the public, allowing visitors to experience the restraints of poverty living.

During a nine-minute tour, visitors will connect with the sights, sounds and feel of substandard living conditions and learn what they can do to help fight poverty housing in America.

“Substandard housing is a global problem, but it’s also a problem that touches the lives of people right here in our own community,” said Ann Felton, chairman and CEO of Central Oklahoma Habitat for Humanity. “Unfortunately, until a person has seen and experienced this need, it often remains a problem that is hidden from view.”

The mobile is open to the public from 9-11 a.m. and the home dedication is at 10 a.m. Visitors will also enjoy games, kids’ activities, volunteer information and a take-home memento.

The new home and this unique tour opportunity are a result of an alliance between Habitat for Humanity International and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans called Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity. Thrivent Financial for Lutherans donated 65 percent of the costs for the home, which is certified to LEED silver standards and is energy efficient, maximizing the affordability of the new home.
