Winter Issue of Thrivent Magazine Arriving in Mailboxes Now
Stories on faith, finance and volunteerism feature members of Thrivent Financial
| MINNEAPOLIS/APPLETON, Wis. (Jan. 22, 2009) – The latest issue of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans’ member magazine Thrivent features Thrivent chapter members from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS).
In the Winter 2008 issue, the cover story, “Health Care Rx: 10 Ways to Be a Smart Consumer,” provides 10 tips to help readers minimize the financial impact of rising costs. Other featured articles include “My Generation,” which looks at how each generation approaches money management; “Destination Mississippi,” which shares the personal experience of Thrivent magazine editor Donna Mulder during a Thrivent Builds with Habitat for Humanity build; “How Much Risk Can You Handle?” which takes readers through an informal quiz to measure their tolerance to risk in their investment program; and “Purposeful Prayer,” which explores how journaling can take prayer to a whole new level. The Winter 2008 issue features the following ELCA members and congregations: • The Rev. Stuart Dornfield is featured in “Live Give Grow: Lego-Loving Lutheran.” In 2008, Dornfield used LEGO® bricks to build an exact replica of his church, Emanuel Lutheran, in Brandon, Wisconsin (East-Central Synod of Wisconsin). Dornfield is a member of the West Fond du Lac County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Jay Beyer is featured in “Health Care Rx: 10 Ways to Be a Smart Consumer.” Beyer is a pharmacist and owner of Beyer’s Pharmacy in Aurora, Indiana, and shares ways that pharmacists can help consumers save money on medication. Beyer attends St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lawrenceburg, Indiana (Indiana-Kentucky Synod). • The Rev. Peter Brown is featured in “Purposeful Prayer.” Brown has used a prayer journal for more than 10 years and shares ways that journaling has helped his reflection. Brown is senior pastor at St. Mark’s Lutheran church in Charlotte, North Carolina, (North Carolina Synod) and is a member of the Greater Charlotte Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Joe Reilly, a Thrivent Financial representative in Worthington, Ohio, is featured in “Real Life Q&A: RMDs Explained.” Reilly answers some common questions about the required minimum distributions that must be taken from retirement accounts after age 70½. Reilly attends Gethsemane Lutheran Church (Southern Ohio Synod) in Columbus, Ohio, and is a member of the West Franklin County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Adam Klohr, a Thrivent Financial representative in Jacksonville, Florida, is featured in “At Home, In Church, Abroad: Benefit Picnic.” Klohr was one of several financial representatives who solicited donations from local businesses as part of a fundraiser picnic for a local police officer who had been shot in the line of duty. Klohr attends St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Jackonsville (Florida-Bahamas Synod) and is a member of the Jacksonville-First Coast Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Dan Johnson is also featured in “At Home, In Church, Abroad: Benefit Picnic” as one of the financial representatives who assisted in the fundraiser for the police officer. Johnson attends Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Church in Jacksonville (Florida-Bahamas Synod). • Deb Kress is featured in “At Home, In Church, Abroad: Safety First.” As a Thrivent Financial representative, Kress recently organized a presentation on identity theft for members and guests of the Hudson Valley New York Chapter of Thrivent Financial. The presentation was given by a representative of the City of Kingston Police Department. Kress attends Christ’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Woodstock, New York, (Metropolitan New York Synod) and is a member of the Hudson Valley Chapter. • Peace Lutheran Church in Las Cruces, New Mexico, is featured in “At Home, In Church, Abroad: Project Linus.” Volunteers of the congregation helped to prepare and deliver 154 blankets for Project Linus. The program distributes the blankets to children who are sick or otherwise in need. Peace Lutheran church is the ELCA Rocky Mountain Synod. The Winter 2008 issue features the following LCMS members and congregrations: • Tara Perre is featured in “Live Give Grow: Hair to Spare.” Perre and her daughter, Abby, each recently had their long hair cut and donated to organizations that make wigs for women and children who are ill. The Perre family attends Peace Lutheran Church in Neenah, Wisconsin, (South Wisconsin District / Circuit #15 – Winnebago) and is a member of the South Winnebago Wisconsin Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Ruth Clark is featured in “Health Care Rx: 10 Ways to Be a Smart Consumer / She Did It!” After falling into a six-day diabetic coma in 2002, Clark learned how to eat nutritionally balanced meals and better manage her blood sugar. Today, she volunteers at the Reppell Diabetes Learning Center to help others learn the skills they need to manage their disease. Clark attends Redeemer Lutheran Church in Mountain Home, Arkansas, (Mid-South District / Circuit #2 – Fayetteville) and is a member of the Twin Lakes Arkansas Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Ralph Fisher and Vicki Aden are featured in “My Generation.” The father-daughter duo are part of the four-generation family featured in the article, sharing their personal financial stories to illustrate how different generations have varying approaches to financial management. Fisher and Aden both attend Immanuel Lutheran Church in Brandon, Florida, (Florida-Georgia Synod / Circuit #15 – Tampa) and are members of the East Hillsborough County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Richard Steinbrueck is also featured in “My Generation.” As a Thrivent Financial representative, Steinbrueck works with both Ralph Fisher and Vicki Aden to ensure their financial programs are in line with their goals. Steinbrueck also attends Immanuel Lutheran Church and is a member of the East Hillsborough County Chapter. • The Rev. Dien Ashley Taylor is featured in “Purposeful Prayer.” Taylor keeps a prayer journal to capture prayers of thanksgiving, notes, drawings, poems or other things that have shaped his prayer practices. Taylor is pastor at Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Bronx, New York, (Atlantic District / Circuit #5 – Bronx) and is a member of the Metro North New York Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Clea Parker is also featured in “Purposeful Prayer.” Parker suggests ways that parents and mentors can make prayer a natural part of a young person’s life. She attends Christ Lutheran Church in East Point, Georgia, (Florida-Georgia District / Circuit #3 – Atlanta South) and is a member of the South Fulton County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Barbara Jacobs, a Thrivent Financial representative, is featured in “At Home, In Church, Abroad: Benefit Picnic.” Jacobs was one of several financial representatives who solicited donations from local businesses as part of a fundraiser picnic for a local police officer who had been shot in the line of duty. Jacobs attends Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Jackonsville Beach, Florida (Florida-Georgia District / Circuit #6 – First Coast). • Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Eufaula, Oklahoma, is featured in “At Home, In Church, Abroad: Playground Restoration.” The congregation worked with Thrivent Financial members and other organizations to clean up and restore a playground at the Eufaula Youth Emergency Shelter. Good Shepherd is in the LCMS Oklahoma District / Circuit #7 – Tulsa. • Regina Law Smith is the featured author of “Daily Bread.” Smith shares her insights and personal experiences into how everyday events can be powerful reminders of God’s hand at work. Smith attends Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Rome, Georgia, (Florida-Georgia District / Circuit 32 – Atlanta North) and is a member of the Etowah Chapter of Thrivent Financial. The Winter 2008 issue features the following WELS members and congregations: • The Rev. Mark Jeske is featured in “Live Give Grow: Lights, Camera, Lutheran!” which introduces readers to “Time of Grace,” a weekly 30-minute television program that is broadcast throughout the U.S. and is available on the internet. Jeske is pastor of St. Marcus Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and is a member of the Metro Milwaukee County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. (St. Marcus is in the WELS Southeastern Wisconsin District, the Milwaukee Urban Conference.) • Grace Lutheran Church in Upland, California, is featured in “At Home, In Church, Abroad: Sock Hop” for its annual sock hop dance to gather new socks for needy children in the local public school district. (Grace Lutheran Church is in the WELS Arizona-California District, the California-South Conference.) The Winter 2008 issue features the following Thrivent chapters: • The Chautauqua Thrivent Chapter is featured in “At Home, In Church, Abroad: Coffee Break.” The chapter held a fundraiser at a rest area along Interstate 86 to raise money for wheelchairs at the Buffalo Veterans Home in Buffalo, New York. • The Southeast Oklahoma Chapter is featured in “At Home, In Church, Abroad: Playground Restoration.” The chapter contributed nearly $550 to help volunteers to clean up and restore a playground at the Eufaula Youth Emergency Shelter in Eufaula, Oklahoma. • The Clay County and Jacksonville-First Coast Chapters are featured in “At Home, In Church, Abroad: Benefit Picnic.” The two chapters worked together to raise nearly $25,000 for a local police officer who was shot seven times in the line of duty. • The Southwest New Mexico Chapter is featured in “At Home, In Church, Abroad: Project Linus.” Volunteers from the chapter helped bag and deliver nearly 154 blankets for Project Linus. The program distributes the blankets to children who are sick or otherwise in need. • The West San Bernardino County Chapter is featured in “At Home, In Church, Abroad: Sock Hop.” The chapter partners with Grace Lutheran church in Upland, California, on an annual sock hop dance that gathers new socks for needy children in the local school district.
