Thrivent Financial and Lutheran congregations seek to raise $320,000 for Minnesota FoodShare

Thrivent Financial offers incentive match for cash contributions to local food shelves

MINNEAPOLIS (Nov. 13, 2008) – Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Minnesota FoodShare and Lutheran congregations across Minnesota are partnering to raise money for food shelves during the Thanksgiving season. This year, Thrivent Financial is adding a special incentive to the effort.

During this special Thanksgiving appeal, local food shelves will receive $1 for every $3 they raise, up to a total donation of $80,000 from Thrivent Financial. When the Thrivent Financial incentive match is combined with dollars raised locally, the campaign could result in up to $320,000 for Minnesota food shelves.

Thrivent Financial volunteers are working closely with Minnesota’s Lutheran congregations to encourage support of local food shelves. Monetary donations are being sought at this time since food shelves can purchase food in bulk at better rates than consumers.

According to Minnesota FoodShare, close to one million Minnesotans live in households struggling to put food on the table. The organization also reports that food shelf use is at record highs across the state.

Thrivent Financial is asking members of Minnesota-based Lutheran congregations and other Minnesotans to write checks to their local food shelves and add “Thrivent Financial Campaign” in the memo line so the donation will be supplemented. Contributions must be received by the local food shelf no later than Dec. 12, 2008.

Additional information, forms and resources are available on the Minnesota FoodShare Web site at: www.gmcc.org/foodshare (click on the link “2008 Thrivent Financial for Lutherans Campaign Information”).
