Fall issue of Thrivent magazine arriving in mailboxes now
Stories on faith, finance and volunteerism feature many members of Thrivent Financial
| MINNEAPOLIS/APPLETON, Wis. (Oct. 14, 2008) – The latest issue of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans’ member magazine Thrivent features Thrivent chapter members from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS).
In the Fall 2008 issue, the cover story, “Values+Valuables,” explores how members can leave their legacy to the people and organizations they care about — from articulating the values they want to be remembered for, to outlining how they want our assets to be distributed when they die. Other featured articles include “Straight Talk with Your Doctor,” which provides 10 tips to help members make the most of their next doctor’s appointment; “What if I Lose My Job?” which outlines an action plan of steps to take during the first days and weeks after a job loss; Eat, Save and Be Merry” offers budget-friendly entertaining ideas for the holidays; and “Speaking of Service,” which shares words of inspiration from Thrivent Financial members who received a 2008 Volunteer Excellence Award. From Florida to Washington, ELCA, LCMS and WELS members are active with Thrivent Financial, whether talking about their faith, finances or helping others. The Fall 2008 issue features the following ELCA members: •Anne Johns, a Thrivent Financial representative, is featured in “What if I Lose My Job?” Johns shares tips to help members rein in spending, develop a budget, and make sure their financial programs remain protected when someone loses a job. Johns attends Epiphany Lutheran Church in Alexandria, Virginia, (ELCA Metropolitan Washington, D.C. Synod) and is a member of the Alexandria Chapter of Thrivent Financial. •Thrivent Financial representative Jim Dunlop is featured in \"Values+Valuables,” which explores how members can pass on their personal and financial legacy after their death. Dunlop attends St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, (ELCA Lower Susquehanna Synod) and is a member of the Adams County Pennsylvania Chapter of Thrivent Financial. •Lori Henry, a Thrivent Financial representative in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, is also featured in “Values+Valuables.” Henry attends St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lewistown (ELCA Upper Susquehanna Synod) and is a member of the Mifflin County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. •Kathryn Clements is featured in “Eat, Save and Be Merry.” As a registered dietician in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, Clements offers tips to help readers save both money and calories on their holiday entertaining. Clements attends St. John Lutheran in Northfield, Minnesota, (ELCA Southeastern Minnesota Synod) and is a member of the North Goodhue County Chapter. •Michael Glantz is featured in “Getting Together: Home Improvement” for work to rejuvenate the director’s house at Mount Cross Ministries in Felton, California. As a Thrivent Financial representative, Glantz worked with the South Santa Clara County Thrivent Chapter to organize volunteers and find funding to get the house ready. Glantz attends Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in San Jose, California (ELCA Sierra Pacific Synod). The Fall 2008 issue features the following LCMS members and congregrations: •Steve Goss is featured in “Values+Valuables,” which explores how members can pass on their personal and financial legacy after their death. Goss’s parents implemented a financial program to pass on their legacy to their sons. He attends Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, (LCMS North Wisconsin District, Circuit #9/Eau Claire) and is a member of the Eau Claire County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. •Laura Noon is featured in “Straight Talk with Your Doctor.” The story provides 10 tips to help readers make the most of their next doctor’s appointment. Noon, a registered nurse, attends St. Paul Lutheran in Birmingham, Alabama, (LCMS Southern District, Circuit #9 / Alabama Central) and is a member of the North Central Alabama Thrivent Chapter. •Thrivent Financial representative Drew Woodburn is an expert resource in “Real Life Questions + Answers,” answering common questions about Medicare Part D coverage. Woodburn is a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Cordova, Nebraska, (LCMS Nebraska District, Circuit #18/Seward) and is a member of the Hamilton-York County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. •Dori Stanek is featured in “Getting Together: Flood Relief Projects.” Stanek worked with her fellow congregation members from Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to gather cleaning supplies, personal items and other donations for people affected by the severe flooding of June 2008. Trinity Lutheran is in the LCMS Iowa East District, Circuit #2B / Cedar Rapids South. Stanek is a member of the Benton County Iowa Chapter of Thrivent Financial. •Monica Bellizzi is featured in “Getting Together: Home Improvement” for work to rejuvenate the director’s house at Mount Cross Ministries in Felton, California. As a Thrivent Financial representative, Bellizzi worked with the South Santa Clara County Thrivent Chapter to organize volunteers and find funding to get the house ready. She attends Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Los Gatos, California (LCMS California/Nevada/Hawaii District, Circuit #18 / Santa Clara). •St. Luke Lutheran Church in Manhattan, Kansas, is featured in “Getting Together: Tornado Cleanup.” Members of the congregation worked together in June 2008 to clean up the aftermath of tornadoes in Chapman and Manhattan. St. Luke Lutheran is in the LCMS Kansas District, Circuit #8 / Manhattan. •Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Antioch, Illinois, is featured in “Getting Together: Church Fund-Raiser.” Members of the congregation raised more than $8,200 to help a local family offset medical and travel costs when their daughter was diagnosed with a rare brain condition. Beautiful Savior is in the LCMS Northern Illinois District, Circuit #1. \"The Fall 2008 issue features the following WELS members: •Thrivent Financial representative Jonathan Kroening is featured in “Values+Valuables,” which explores how members can pass on their personal and financial legacy after their death. He attends St. James Lutheran Church in Menomonie, Wisconsin, and is a member of the Chippewa Valley Chapter of Thrivent Financial. •Sara Schwartz is featured in “Eat, Save and Be Merry.” As co-owner of a restaurant and catering business in Wautoma, Wisconsin, Schwartz shares tips on how to save money during holiday entertaining. Schwartz attends Peace Lutheran Church in Wautoma and is a member of the Waushara County Thrivent Chapter. The Fall 2008 issue features the following Thrivent chapters: •The North and South San Diego Thrivent Chapters are featured in “Getting Together: After the Fires.” The chapter joined hands with 14 Lutheran churches and the Escondido Sunrise Rotary to help victims of the devastating fires that swept through San Diego County, California, in October 2007. •The East and West Yellowstone Thrivent Chapters are featured in “Getting Together: Church on the Move.” The chapters are working with several local Lutheran congregations to restore a century-old Lutheran church that was moved to Billings, Montana, two years ago. •The Central Mississippi Chapter of Thrivent Financial is featured in “Getting Together: Community Crafting,” for its work to hand craft 125 wire-and-bead crosses that will be sold at gift shops in Mississippi. The funds raised will provide commissary funds for inmates at Hinds County Detention Center. •The East Cuyahoga, Northwest Cuyahoga and South Cuyahoga Thrivent Chapters are featured in “Getting Together: Urban Outreach.” The chapters provided funding and worked together on Join Hands Day activities at 25 area Lutheran congregations, schools and other social and faith-based agencies. •Five southern Colorado Thrivent chapters – Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, Fremont-Custer County, Arkansas Valley and Sangre de Cristo – are featured in “Getting Together: Barbecue and Baseball.” The chapters sponsored the fifth annual Lutherans at the Sky Sox event and helped raise more than $7,150 for two Lutheran camps.
