Fitch affirms Thrivent Financial for Lutherans’ AA+ rating

Fortune 500 organization also receives stable rating outlook

MINNEAPOLIS (Aug. 14, 2008) – Fitch Ratings has affirmed its AA+ insurer financial strength rating1 for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and its subsidiary, Thrivent Life Insurance Company. The AA+ rating is the second highest on Fitch’s rating scale among 21 ratings.

“This affirmation of our rating reflects our strong financial position, which demonstrates that our members can count on us to be excellent stewards of their resources,” said Randy Boushek, Thrivent Financial senior vice president and chief financial officer.

Fitch’s insurer financial strength ratings are based on a comprehensive analysis of an insurer’s regulatory solvency, liquidity, operating performance, balance sheet strength, management quality, competitive positioning and long-term business viability, among others.

According to Fitch’s opinion, issued July 31, the rating recognizes Thrivent Financial’s “established market franchise, consistently strong risk-adjusted capitalization, strong asset quality, low expense structure, and adequate profitability.” The opinion also cited Thrivent Financial’s strong membership affinity, which “contributes to its excellent life insurance policy lapse rate, which at 4.7 percent in 2007 is among the lowest in the industry.”2

Fitch noted that its rating outlook for Thrivent Financial is stable.
