Summer issue of Thrivent magazine arriving in mailboxes now
Stories on faith, finance and volunteerism feature many members of Thrivent Financial
| MINNEAPOLIS/APPLETON, Wis. (July 22, 2008) – The latest issue of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans’ member magazine Thrivent features Thrivent chapter members from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS).
In the Summer 2008 issuethe cover story, Money Mistakes,” looks at three common problem areas—spending more than you have, failing to plan ahead and working without a safety net—and provides expert tips for getting back on track financially. Other featured articles include Moving Back In,” which explores the trend of adult children moving back in with their parents; Mutual Funds,” which offers need-to-know tips and insights on this popular investment tool; “Saving Lives,” which outlines the need for organ donation; and “Going Green at Home,” which suggests easy ways to reduce energy use and impact on the environment. From Florida to Washington, ELCA, LCMS and WELS members are active with Thrivent Financial, whether talking about their faith, finances or helping others. The Summer 2008 issue features the following ELCA members and congregations: • Peace Lutheran Church in Danville, Calif., is highlighted in “A Portrait of Community.” To commemorate its 50th anniversary, the congregation created a large mosaic with help from members of the broader local faith community. The mosaic includes symbols representing the various faith communities and features an open space to display interchangeable artwork. Peace Lutheran Church is in the ELCA Sierra Pacific Synod. (Oregon Synod). • The Rev. Jeff Wild in “Money Matters/Going Green at Home,” shares information on how his congregation has become more eco-friendly over the past eight years. Wild is pastor of Advent Lutheran Church in Madison, Wis. (South Central Synod of Wisconsin). • Thrivent Financial representative Adam Klohr is highlighted in “Money Mistakes,” providing insight on how members can avoid common financial blunders. Klohr attends St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Fla., (Florida/Bahamas Synod) and is a member of the Jacksonville First Coast Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Gwenn Branstad, a Thrivent Financial representative, is featured in “Moving Back In.” She provides guidance for families to establish financial expectations and other parameters when adult children return home to live. Branstad attends Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minn. (Minneapolis Area Synod). • Thrivent Financial representative Jeff Sturm is also featured in “Moving Back In.” Sturm shares his personal story of how he and his wife, Laurie, managed responsibilities and expectations for their son, Derek, to live at home. The Sturms attend St. Paul’s Lutheran in Roberts, Ill., (Central/Southern Illinois Synod) and are members of the Ford County, Ill., Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • DeAnna Hoien is highlighted in “Saving Lives.” Hoien donated a kidney a few years ago to help an extended family member and shares her story to emphasize the importance of organ donation. Hoien attends Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo, Minn., (Minneapolis Area Synod) and is a member of the Wright County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Marcia Pate is also featured in “Saving Lives.” Pate also donated a kidney to help someone in need; the recipient was someone who had helped her brother through a chemical dependency rehabilitation program 30 years ago. Pate attends St. Mark Lutheran in Hunstville, Ala., (Southeastern Synod) and is a member of the North Alabama Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Diane and David Allison are featured in “Living Well: Walk Your Way.” The Allisons walk regularly to help them keep fit and to enjoy one of their favorite pastimes: birdwatching. They attend Christ Lutheran Church in Pipersville, Pa., (Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod) and are members of the Upper Bucks County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Elaine Balinski is highlighted in the online content for “Living Well: Walk Your Way.” Balinski organizes a charity walk that supports the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and she recruits walkers to participate. She attends St. Michael Lutheran Church in Sellersville, Pa., (Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod) and is also a member of the Upper Bucks County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Thrivent Financial representative John Ungerman is an expert resource in “Real Life Questions + Answers,” providing tips to help new college graduates get off to a strong financial start. Ungerman is a member of St. James Lutheran in Pottstown, Pa., (Southeastern Pennsylvania Synod) and is a member of the Upper Montgomery County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Joy and Johnny Strayer are featured in “Getting Together: A Child’s Charity.” Instead of a traditional birthday party, 8-year-old Johnny asked his guests to donate to Habitat for Humanity. Others got behind the effort, and nearly $4,000 was raised. The Strayers attend Sheridan Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Neb., (Nebraska Synod) and are members of the Lancaster County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Rita Sewell is featured in “Getting Together: Fancy Footwork.” Sewell helped organize a drive for soccer supplies for players in Liberia, Africa. Sewell attends Lutheran Church of the Cross in St. Petersburg, Fla., (Florida/Bahamas Synod) and is a member of the South Pinellas County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Lutheran Church of the Cross Day School is also featured in “Getting Together: Fancy Footwork.” Students at the school helped collect and sort items for the soccer supply drive, and sold candy to raise funds to ship the supplies to Africa. The Summer 2008 issue features the following LCMS members: • Thrivent Financial representative Hans Van Dyke is highlighted in “Money Mistakes,” providing insight on how members can avoid common financial blunders. Van Dyke attends Holy Cross Lutheran in Kerrville, Texas, (LCMS Texas District, Circuit #24) and is a member of the Kerr-Kendall County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Thrivent Financial representative Darrell Shideler is highlighted in “Mutual Funds,” which offers need-to-know tips and insights on this popular investment tool. Shideler attends First Immanuel Church in San Jose, Calif., (LCMS California/Nevada/Hawaii District, Circuit #18/Santa Clara) and is a member of the Central Santa Clara County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Tony and Sharon Richter and their daughters Katherine and Meredith are featured in “Moving Back In.” The Richters share their personal story of why they welcomed their adult children to live at home, as well as expectations that have been set. The family attends Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Tuscaloosa, Ala., (LCMS Southern District, Circuit #9/Alabama Central) and are members of the North Central Alabama Chapter of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans. • Charlie Collins is highlighted in “Saving Lives.” Several years ago, Collins received a kidney from an extended family member, and he shares his personal story to help raise awareness of the importance of organ donation. Collins attends Zion Lutheran Church in Cologne, Minn, (LCMS Minnesota South District, Circuit #10/Carver County) and is a member of the McLeod County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Thrivent Financial representative Boone Jackson is an expert resource in “Real Life Questions + Answers,” offering reasons why it’s important to have life insurance on children and sharing his personal story of how juvenile life insurance has helped guarantee future insurance coverage for his son, Liam. Jackson is a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Weldon Springs, Mo., (LCMS Missouri District, Circuit #15/St. Charles East) and is a member of the Central St. Charles County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. • Jesse Engelmann is featured in “Getting Together: More Than Chatter.” Engelman is an active participant in Lutherans Online and helps to coordinate an annual gathering of Thrivent members who participate in the chat room. Engelmann is a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Antigo, Wis., (LCMS Northern Wisconsin District, Circuit #17/Antigo) and a member of the Mid-Wisconsin Chapter of Thrivent Financial. The Summer 2008 issue features the following WELS member: • Thrivent Financial representative Nancy Hanson is featured in “Getting Together: Hunger Relief.” In early March, thousands of volunteers from Lutheran schools across Minnesota helped package meals for the nonprofit Kids Against Hunger; Hanson participated in the activities in her community. She attends St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Redwood Falls, Minn., and is a member of the Redwood County Chapter of Thrivent Financial. The Summer 2008 issue features the following Thrivent chapters and members: • The Alexandria Chapter of Thrivent Financial is featured in “Getting Together: Project Socks.” The chapter donated more than 1,000 pairs of socks for children at Village of Hope School in Gantier, Haiti.
