A.M. Best affirms Thrivent Financial’s top rating

Fortune 500 organization receives A++ (Superior) rating for financial strength

MINNEAPOLIS (June 26, 2008) – A.M. Best Company, Inc., a leading insurance ratings agency, has affirmed Thrivent Financial for Lutherans’ A++ (Superior) rating,* the highest an organization can receive among A.M. Best’s scale of 15 ratings. A.M. Best also noted that its outlook for Thrivent Financial is stable. A.M. Best’s ratings are based on a comprehensive quantitative and qualitative evaluation of a company’s balance sheet strength, operating performance and business profile.

According to A.M. Best’s opinion, issued June 19, the rating reflects Thrivent Financial’s strong market presence within the Lutheran community, its favorable level of risk-adjusted capitalization and consistently positive statutory operating results in its core lines.

The opinion states that Thrivent Financial “continues to demonstrate strong affinity and name recognition within its Lutheran base by providing diversified financial services products and fraternal benefits programs. Both statutory and GAAP surplus has risen steadily over the past five years, led by positive earnings performance and investment gains.”

“This affirmation of our rating reflects our strong financial base, which is vital to our commitment to our members,” said Randy Boushek, Thrivent Financial senior vice president and chief financial officer.

The opinion also acknowledges a competitive reality: “Although Thrivent Financial operates as a fraternal benefit society, it still faces strong competition from commercial carriers, particularly in its individual life and retirement savings segments.”
